The Rise of the ‘Workation’

October 21, 2025

Why remote work + holiday is now a mainstream travel choice

What started as a pandemic-era necessity has evolved into a genuine lifestyle and market segment. The ‘workation’ — blending remote work with a holiday retreat — is growing fast. In 2025, travellers are no longer satisfied with pure ‘getaway’ stays or bare-bones business hotels. They want properties that support productivity and reset.

Some key forces behind the trend:

  • Burnout and wellbeing: Many workers are seeking relief from screen fatigue, and studies show that changing environment helps reset creative energy.
  • Permanent remote / hybrid work: Employers are increasingly comfortable with remote models, making longer stays in destination locales viable.
  • Longer stays: Analysts note a shift toward longer bookings (weeks to months) in short‑term rental markets, as remote workers ‘settle in’ rather than just holiday.
  • Destination differentiation: Regions like Tasmania are gaining appeal, as remote workers search for spectacular natural landscapes, lower cost, and peaceful surroundings away from large urban centres.

For properties in Tasmania (or anywhere remote/natural), making your stay ‘workation ready’ can open the door to new guest segments and higher occupancy — especially in shoulder or off-peak seasons.

What Makes a Property Truly Remote‑Work Friendly

Here are the essential features and design choices that transform a retreat into a work‑friendly retreat.

1. Reliable, high‑speed internet

  • Bandwidth & stability: Aim for symmetrical speeds (upload and download) sufficient for video conferencing, cloud tools, streaming, etc.  Consider having a backup (e.g. cellular or secondary ISP) in case one fails.
  • Wired connections: While WiFi is indispensable, having at least one Ethernet port (e.g. in a desk area) can be a strong differentiator for guests with demanding connectivity needs.
  • Network segmentation: Create a ‘guest/work’ network separate from streaming / entertainment traffic, so heavy Netflix use doesn’t degrade work calls.
  • Power backup / surge protection: A UPS for routers/modems helps avoid dropouts during brief power blips.

Without robust connectivity, all the other amenities don’t matter — and many workation seekers will skip properties with unreliable internet.

2. A purposeful workspace

  • Ergonomic desk & chair: Provide a stable desk (ideally adjustable height), comfortable chair (with lumbar support), good leg clearance, and a monitor riser or stand if possible.
  • Lighting: Daylight-balanced lighting (ideally adjustable) over the desk area is critical, along with good natural light. Avoid harsh lights or exclusively overhead downlights.
  • Quiet, focused zones: The workspace should be in a quieter corner, away from heavy foot traffic, kitchen noises, or bathroom doors. Where possible, allow for separation (e.g. folding screens, partial walls) so the work zone feels distinct from the living/sleeping zone.

3. Acoustic comfort & environmental control

  • Soft furnishings: Carpets, rugs, curtains, and fabric upholstery help absorb echoes and reduce harsh reverb in calls.
  • Ventilation & fresh air: Windows that open, ceiling fans, or good HVAC with fresh air allow long hours indoors without stuffiness.

4. Peaceful surroundings & lighting

  • Quiet locale: Rural or nature‑adjacent settings are often the draw — but make sure external noises like traffic, farm machinery, or neighbours are minimal.
  • Good external lighting: Path lights, ambient outdoor lighting let guests move safely at dusk.
  • Window treatments: Blinds or curtains to block glare or early morning light boosts comfort during work hours.

5. Amenities for balance & convenience

  • Reliable utilities: Heating, cooling, hot water — consistency is key.
  • Kitchen / kitchenette: A well-equipped space means guests can prepare meals instead of needing to eat out for every lunch.
  • Comfort breaks: Lounge seating or a small garden/balcony provides ‘breakout’ spots and gives relief between work sprints.
  • Local essentials info: Provide guest guides to local cafés, coworking hubs, grocery stores, and mobile connectivity (e.g. strongest mobile network in the area).

6. Flexible booking & services

  • Long-stay discounts: Encourage 1+ week or monthly bookings with favourable rates.
  • Add-on services: Housekeeping mid‑stay, linen changes, grocery deliveries, or meal hampers.
  • Clear communication: Transparently advertise ‘workation amenities’  (e.g. WiFi speed, desk setup, noise levels) so guests know exactly what to expect. Managing guests expectations (not over selling yourself) will reduce the amount of times you are contacted during a stay.

Why Owners & Hosts Should Care

  • Higher occupancy & longer bookings: Workationers tend to stay longer (weeks to months).
  • Differentiation in a crowded market: In Tasmania, many retreats compete on natural beauty alone. Stand out by adding functional work amenities.
  • Off-season demand: Remote workers are less seasonally constrained than holiday tourists — they can fill gaps in low season.
  • Positive reviews & referrals: Guests likely to leave praise around ‘this was perfect for working remotely’ and bring others.

How Retreats Tasmania Can Lead the Way

As a company specializing in Tasmanian retreats, you’re positioned perfectly to ride the workation wave. Some ideas on how we could help you:

  1. Property audit: Assessing each site for connectivity, workspace layout, acoustics, etc.
  2. Flag ‘Workation-ready’ properties: On our website, we can filter or label retreats as ‘Remote Work Friendly’.
  3. Packages & promos: Market longer stay packages aimed at remote workers.
  4. Content marketing: Hosting blog posts, guest stories, or guides about working remotely from Tasmania.
  5. Guest feedback loop: We can ask workation guests for feedback on how to improve — they’ll tell you what they really need.
