The city’s historic waterfront is bathed in a moody, crimson glow. The scent of woodsmoke, roasted feast foods, and spiced mulled wine fills the crisp night air. Thousands of people, locals and bundled up interstate visitors alike gather along the dark waters of the Derwent River, drawn to a festival that is utterly unlike any other in the world.
This is Dark Mofo.
Today, it is a hallmark of the Tasmanian cultural calendar and a bucket list event for travellers worldwide. But how did a mid winter festival rooted in ancient solstice rituals, avant-garde art, and a celebration of darkness become such a cultural phenomenon?
Let’s take a look back at the history of the festival that taught us all to stop dreading the Tasmanian winter and start celebrating it.
Before Dark Mofo arrived in 2013, Hobart in June was notoriously quiet. The summer crowds had long gone, the days were short, the nights were freezing, and many local businesses braced for the winter slump.
Enter the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and its visionary founder, David Walsh, alongside the festival's creative director, Leigh Carmichael. They asked a radical question: Instead of hiding from the cold and the dark, what if we celebrated it?
The inaugural Dark Mofo in 2013 was a revelation. It tapped into ancient, pagan inspired winter solstice traditions. Themes of birth, death, rebirth, and the seasonal cycle and paired them with large scale light installations, boundary pushing contemporary art, and exceptional food.
To everyone's surprise (and delight), thousands of people poured into the streets. Tasmanians didn't just accept the festival; they threw themselves into it. A winter myth was born.
Over the last decade, Dark Mofo has established a series of iconic rituals that define the festival experience.
Dark Mofo has never been a festival to play it safe. Over the years, it has courted its fair share of controversy, featuring confronting performance art, massive inverted crosses lining the highway, and art installations that challenge social norms.
But it is precisely this uncompromising, fearless artistic vision that put Hobart on the global cultural map. Dark Mofo proved that Tasmania isn’t just a place for stunning wilderness and quiet heritage, it is a place capable of hosting world class, avant-garde art that could rival any major global metropolis. It transformed Hobart from a sleepy seasonal town into a year round cultural powerhouse.
As the festival evolved through the late 2010s and into the 2020s, it matured. It shifted its focus toward sustainability, deep respect for the Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) people, the traditional custodians of the land who have observed the winter solstice here for millennia, and curated line ups that balance intense, thought provoking art with pure, joyful community celebration.
What started as an experimental mid winter gamble has completely reshaped the identity of a Tasmanian winter. It taught us that the cold is something to be shared, the darkness is something to be illuminated, and a roaring fire with good food and great company is the best antidote to the winter blues.
Experiencing Dark Mofo is an unforgettable assault on the senses. Because the festival transforms the city, accommodation in and around Hobart fills up months in advance.
